Giving Tuesday thoughts
I met my dear friend and collaborator, Erin Ajayi, years ago as fundraisers in higher education. Being a Black woman in fundraising can be lonely, so when we found each other, we settled in for the long haul. We’ve brainstormed together, edited each other’s annual giving campaign appeals, validated, and affirmed our perceptions in moments of workplace racism and sexism. Together, we’ve advocated for Black fundraising professionals and championed funding for Black-led organizations and women of color. These days we are calling for a necessary shift in the way philanthropy functions. Read our thoughts here.
We began working together on consulting projects two years ago and we have learned so much about each other, about philanthropy, and what it means to do good work, better. We take care of each other, experience joy together, and relish in each others’ successes. Beyond our co-authored blog, my Giving Tuesday message is this: if you are a fundraising leader, the work can be lonely. Give yourself the gift of a friend in your field. And take a trip with them. In fact, take a few. You deserve it.
